The best homemade taco seasonings

This is my family’s favorite homemade taco seasoning recipe! It’s much better than store-bought and works with chicken, fish, shrimp, pork, beef and vegetables! This easy recipe is for goalkeepers!

If you’ve seen our homemade chili powder or Cajun seasonings, you’ll know we love making homemade seasonings. Our taco seasonings are mainly spices you may already have in the spice cabinet and an optional special ingredient that makes this blend very delicious.

Our readers call this mixture “wonderful,” “goalkeeper” and “much better than store-bought brands.” I used it to make our simple pork tacos and happily sprinkle it on ground beef, chicken, seafood and vegetables. And, if you are not convinced, the mixture will last in your spice cabinet for months (although I bet you will use it soon once you try it!).

How to Season Tacos

Taco seasoning is easy at home. Actually, you may be sitting in most ingredients in the spice cabinet right now. Here are the spices you need:

  • Chili powder – We recommend homemade chili powder. Your favorite store-buyed chili powder is OK too.
  • Ground cumin – This adds the earthy smoky flavor. It’s common in Tex-Mex, Mexican and curry recipes.
  • Hot smoked paprika – This adds to the smoky smell. Chipotle chili powder is a great choice.
  • Ground coriander – This adds to the citrus flavor.
  • chili – This increases the heat. Add as much or very little as possible to the desired spice level.

In addition to spices, we also added two secret ingredients:

Corn starch – Store-buyed taco seasoning packs include some kind of thickener. When corn starch is mixed with liquid and heated, it will make a sauce for the taco seasoning you use, such as ground meat or vegetables. It also helps the seasonings for everything you are cooking.

Dried mushroom powder – I know this seems to be everywhere, but it’s delicious. Believe me. This is what an article talks about! We often use mushrooms in our cooking. They add a savory flavor to the dishes – even if those dishes don’t have meat. Adding mushroom powder to our taco seasoning ensures incredible flavor.

Have you ever heard anyone talking about Umami? It is considered the fifth flavor: it has sweet, sour, salt, bitter and umami flavors. Umacata is what makes you sm lips. It even translates to “delicious” or “delicious”. Mushrooms will naturally add umami flavor. That’s why we add mushroom powder to the mixture. It makes it taste better.

Use mushroom powder to make tacos season better

You can buy mushroom powder. Or, you can make it yourself. We even shared the essential mushroom powder seasoning you can do at home. Here is the basic process of making your own:

Now that you have mushroom powder, you can add it to your homemade taco seasoning.

Start with dried mushrooms – any type of mushroom can be used. We especially like dried pig mushrooms. They are for sale in large or professional grocery stores, or purchased online. Throw the dried mushrooms into the blender and stir until ground. Store it in a spice jar and use it for your inner content.

Store homemade taco seasonings

Place your homemade taco seasoning in a spice jar, shake it, and store it in a dark pantry for up to six months. When you want to use it, add it according to your taste. For 1 pound of meat (we usually go to Türkiye or pork), we add 1 to 2 tablespoons of taco seasoning.

The best homemade taco seasonings

This homemade taco seasoning tastes much better than anything you buy in the store. Most of the ingredients may already be sitting in the spice cabinet. The secret ingredient is mushroom powder. You can make yourself own (this is our recipe) or you can buy it. Without it, the taco seasoning will still be great, but if you can include it we highly recommend it. Also, the amount of cayenne pepper is up to you. We requested 1/2 teaspoon, which allowed the spices to be mixed in medium to medium levels.
